Low mood, depression, burnout and suicidal thoughts

Feeling empty, sad without a clear reason, unable to move forward: that is not a lack of willpower. Belgium has free helplines, subsidised psychologists and mental health centres.

What you may be going through

  • Depression: lasting sadness, loss of interest, disturbed sleep and appetite.
  • Burnout: work-related exhaustion, cynicism, nothing left to give.
  • Brownout: loss of meaning in work that feels empty.
  • Mental load: thinking of everything for everyone, never able to stop.
  • Anxiety and distress: constant fear, panic attacks, looping thoughts.
  • Suicidal thoughts: wanting the pain to stop.

When not to wait

  • Thoughts of hurting yourself or dying: call 0800 32 123 (French) or 1813 (Dutch), 24/7.
  • You no longer sleep or eat, and cannot get through the day.
  • You isolate yourself, or drink and use more to cope.
  • People close to you are worried.

Finding a psychologist or therapist

  • Your GP is often the fastest entry point and can refer you to a subsidised psychologist (reduced fee).
  • Mental health centres apply income-based fees.
  • Family planning centres and youth services also offer counselling.
  • For young people: youth support services and school guidance centres are free.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a psychologist cost in Belgium?

Psychologists in the national convention charge a reduced fee per session. Mental health centres use income-based fees, and the directory flags free services.

I cannot talk to anyone close to me.

Helplines are anonymous and free: you can talk without giving your name and with no obligation afterwards.

Burnout: do I have to go through my employer?

No. You can start with your GP or a mental health centre. Your company's psychosocial prevention adviser is also bound by confidentiality.
